It will be important to know if the child is really autistic or have autism or mental retardation without a hearing (not heard) or other disorders of language and learning.

Diagnosis should be made within 3 years and this has proved useful in the questionnaire CHAT (Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) that is designed for use at 18 months, at which most parents are already concerned with language delay or social development of their child.

The prognosis is worse if the child has a nonverbal IQ low and when you are not a meaningful language before age 5.
