Signs indicating the proliferation of a fungus
Fungal toenails mycoses are fungi that can infect the skin. But they can also affect the nails, particularly toenails: is onychomycosis. Difficult to treat, it is better to avoid it by following a few rules of prevention.
Ringworm of the nails, onychomycosis or ringworm of the nails. These three names designate an infection of the nails by a fungus (Trichophyton). The fungus grows inside the nail, causing thickening, infiltration and deformation. The nail can then detach from the skin, crumble and fall. Is this a nail fungus?
Look carefully at your nails for signs indicating the proliferation of a fungus:
- Discoloration of the nail (white, yellow-brown).
- The fragility of the nail thickening or vice versa.
- Erosion.
- Deformation of the nail.
- Presence of debris under the nail (especially under the free edge).
- In extreme cases, separation or fall of the nail.
These signs can appear on several or a single nail. Definitive diagnosis is based on taking a sample of nail, which is examined under a microscope or cultured to identify the type of fungus involved. Who is most at risk of fungal nail infections?
- Walking barefoot in public places increases the risk of developing a fungal infection of the feet: cloakroom, swimming pool or other public place hot and humid as a sauna and steam room, for example.
- People with athlete’s foot are also more at risk of onychomycosis. Indeed, athlete’s foot, fungal infection or serving primarily between the toes, sometimes also spread and affect the nail.
- The elderly, diabetics and people with poor circulation are most at risk of onychomycosis. What treatment against the fungus feet?
The treatment is based on antifungal drugs that act against fungi. In cases of mild to moderate infections, it uses an antifungal agent as a coating to be applied directly on the nail. In case of insufficient efficacy, antifungals are taken orally (tablets). In all cases, treatment is long, several months, with a risk of recurrence.
The interest of varnish is the virtual absence of side effects of treatment, while oral antifungals may cause side effects in the liver. In other words, better to prevent nail fungus otherwise examine her nails regularly to consult quickly, before an advanced form connivance. Prevention:
