The disease is characterized by a progressive decline in mental functions. The disease is caused by certain proteins (Amyloid precursor protein : APP) degrade abnormal. This causes abnormal degradation (beta amyloid) which aggregates form. Probably this form of amyloid damaging nerves which then die.
