When to Change the Nappy

When it comes to changing a nappy, there is no specific time that this should be done. It is up to the individual parent or caregiver to determine this. Over time, the parent will get quite good at knowing when the nappy change should be done.

A general guideline for babies of most ages would be to change the nappy approximately every two hours or when it is noticed that it is full.

There are also various times of the day and scenarios when this would vary. During the day, this would include either before or after a nap and obviously after the child has a bowel movement. In addition to a possible odor, there are indicators when the child has a bowel movement. He or she may stop what they are doing and grimace or make grunting noises when they are in the middle of the process. For a wet diaper, a disposable nappy can hold a good amount of liquid. When it is noticed that the nappy is getting full, it should be changed. A lot of babies will go right after having a bottle, so this is another time when a nappy change may be required.

When leaving the house, it is a good idea to change the nappy, even if it was done recently. This will ensure that there is less of a chance of having the change the baby while out. Regardless of the length of the trip, the nappy bag should be brought along in case of an emergency. It should not wait until getting back to be changed.

Overnight, there is usually no need to change a nappy unless it gets full. There are especially made overnight nappies that are extra absorbent and will hold more than the standard one. These are good in allowing the child to sleep through the night without needing a change.

Very quickly, a parent will learn to read the cues and signs of the baby to know when to change the nappy.
